This bathroom redesign in Niskayuna, NY was a very unique project. Art collectors enlisted the help of Andrea Langford Designs to turn their outdated bathroom into an upscale bathroom with increased functionality. They wanted a space they could relax in and show off the art they had traveled around the world to collect.
This bathroom remodeling project had a few design challenges that had to be taken into consideration. The first was the angled roof-line and sky-lights. The angled roof-line made the current limited cabinetry stick out like an eyesore so a better solution was needed. Skylights let in great natural light, but this additional light needed to be balanced out and taken into consideration when redesigning the space. The interior wall also featured stained glass windows that were created by an artist friend. These windows had to mesh well with the new bathroom design. Furthermore, the outside wall was lined with windows that displayed the beautiful view of the property. The clients did not want to sacrifice this view for mirror space, so a unique vanity design that would not cover up the windows was needed.
Developing a Unique Design
The first design change was to remove the unwanted corner tub that had been used once in the 30 years the clients had owned the home. In its place, a large shower area was constructed. The glass of the shower went all the way up to the ceiling to make the room feel more spacious. The glass also served to allow access to the million dollar view their property provided. Large porcelain tiles were used that had a soft gold luster to make the space warm and inviting. The face of the bench seat and the shower niches were accented with glass mosaic tiles that really brought out the opalescent yellow tones of the design. The same mosaic tiles were placed behind the toilet as a nice accent to the art pieces that adorned the shelving above. This shelving space featured a soft lustrous gold wall covering in keeping with the elegant design of the bathroom. The far wall of the bathroom featured large format porcelain tiles with a faint Damask design that really rounded out the overall look of the new bathroom.
To address the slanted ceiling, stepped cabinets were used to follow the ceiling line. They also allowed ample space to display larger art pieces on top of the cabinetry. Neff European style cabinets with glass roll-outs were used along the outside wall to offer ample storage space without blocking the view. The dark wood color chosen offered a nice contrast to the soft and light gold colors used in the rest of the bathroom design. A Calcutta gold marble counter top finished the upscale feel of the custom s-shaped vanity. A medicine cabinet with mirrors inside was placed next to the last window and made a great place for shaving and morning prep.
On the opposite end of the medicine cabinet, a makeup area was created. This space featured a large glass mirror, cut to fit the sloping roof line. A magnifying mirror was also mounted to the wall to make applying the finishing touches simple. A unique make-up friendly glass counter top was utilized in this area, allowing for easy clean-up. The glass was 1 1/8” thick and poured over modeled sand to give the counter top a textured look underneath that could be seen through the smooth top.
Blending Creativity and Function
At Andrea Langford Designs, the goal is to create a beautiful space you can enjoy with functional designs that address your unique lifestyle needs. Quality materials and higher standards of craftsmanship are a given with any bathroom remodel. Design considerations such as the garb bars and low threshold in the shower area, made the bathroom safer and easy to use. Additional lighting from the skylights was balanced out with drop pendant lighting and a beautiful unique curved chandelier. While features such as the glass counter top in the make-up area, and use of porcelain tiles keeps this elegant bathroom renovation very low maintenance. The clients for this bathroom renovation loved how the new layout allowed them to express their creativity in a more functional and elegant way.
