Professional kitchen designer, Andrea Langford Designs was contacted by a family of four in Voorheesville, NY to give their 1990s cookie cutter kitchen a budget-friendly re-do. The goal was to come up with a new kitchen design that had a clean, updated look and also turn the space into a more functional area that fit their family’s lifestyle needs. The original floor plan featured a separate dining table, large storage closet next to the fridge, and a kitchen island that the homeowners purchased to give additional counter space for prepping the family’s meals.
Creating a Family Friendly Kitchen Design
With this kitchen redesign, Andrea wanted to give the clients a space that was easy to clean and maintain, had enough dining space for four, more work surface areas, and more organized storage for the kid’s belongings. Her first move was to get rid of the large two door closet that lacked organization and replace it with additional cabinetry and counter space. This allowed each of the kids to have their own space in the bottom cabinets to store their backpack and school work in an organized fashion. The microwave and toaster were placed in this area in close proximity to the fridge for increased efficiency and convenience. Wall cabinets provided additional structured storage space for the family.
The range stove was also moved to the outside wall to free up additional counter space and allow for more efficient ventilation. The dining area was turned into a peninsula large enough for an eat-in kitchen that comfortably seats four. While the kitchen island in the original floor plan was a good way to add some much needed counter space, the island stuck out and clogged the natural traffic pathways of the kitchen. With the increased counter space of the new design, Andrea was able to remove the kitchen island, which allows traffic to flow through the kitchen better. It also makes the space feel more open and less cluttered.
Utilizing the Right Materials for Your New Kitchen
In any kitchen design, it is important to select materials that fit the client’s lifestyle needs and budget. Quality materials that hold up to years of use is a given with every Andrea Langford Design renovation project. Rutt handcrafted cabinetry was used for this kitchen renovation to replace the worn out cabinets. This high quality cabinetry is designed to last, and features a durable white finish that is easy to keep clean.
For the counter top, Andrea Langford selected a laminate counter top with a dark stone look. Laminate counter tops sometimes get a bad rap, but they are a great economical way to give your kitchen an up to date look. In addition to being budget friendly, they are extremely durable and don’t require the maintenance or special care of granite or marble counter tops. A large stainless steel under mount sink replaced the old kitchen sink and pairs nicely with the laminate counter top for a seamless look and easier clean up.
When it came to lighting the redesigned kitchen, Andrea Langford used a mix of recessed pathway lighting, pendant lighting over the sink and peninsula, natural lighting from the window, under cabinet lighting, and a hood with lights over the range. Utilizing this mix of fixtures created more balanced lighting for the large space. She and the homeowner selected decorative pendant ‘school house’ style lights for the over the peninsula and sink to give the space a classic look.
